There are the basic complications of any surgery: bleeding and infection. Surgery on the pancreas has the extra risk of leakage of pancreatic enzymes. If a Whipple was done, then multiple things were cut and re-connected, so leakage at any of the cut sites is possible. I hope he gets better.
