they’ll be buried or cremated usually, although some freaky people stuff the deceased.
Unfortunately cancer of the pancreas is almost always incurable. Very sadly, nearly everyone diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will eventually die of it. But specialists are getting better at helping patients to live for longer and longer after their diagnosis.
Pancreatic cancer is dangerous partly because it is often diagnosed after it has spread. And partly because it is often quite an aggressive cancer. The pancreas is part of your digestive system. Any advanced cancer in the digestive system will make it more and more difficult for you to eat well and digest food properly. The cancer often spreads to the liver. This is the chemical factory of the body. Having cancer in your liver means the chemical balance of the body is upset. Normally the body rights this sort of imbalance automatically. But when the balance becomes too out of control, the body cannot cope and becomes overwhelmed. When the cancer is very advanced, the chemical balance of the body becomes completely upset. What normally happens then is that you slip into unconsciousness. This is usually right towards the end of your illness, maybe only a few hours or days before you die. Any symptoms you have before that should be able to be controlled, or at least helped, with treatment from your doctor and Macmillan nurse. Talk to them about your fears. What you imagine may happen is often far worse than what actually will. There is information about what happens in the last few days of life in the ‘dying with cancer’ section of CancerHelp UK. God Bless You!
The few I have witnessed were feeling quite well actually – right up to the end. You could see that they were sick, because they had lost a lot of weight, and were real skinny. But they were alert, and in good spirit. Near the end they slept most of the time, and kind of peacefully “slept in”.
My husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer july of 2008. He underwent surgery and then chemotherapy. He had bad days and good days but near the end he required A LOT of pain medication including morphine liquid and methadone and towards the very last week of his life he was on constant IV pain meds. I am going to be honest with you… hospice will try their best to control and manage the pain because pancreatic cancer is very painful. He was so drugged up in the end that all he did was sleep and once in while he would grimace in pain but they would deliver meds through port/iv. He stopped eating a week before he passed and the last few days he stopped taking liquids. It was 2:10 am in the morning when he died and I was at home when they called to tell me so I did not see him pass( I took careof him at home for 7 months but the last 2 weeks he went to the hospital). I think he more or less when into a coma state and then slipped away. Give your mother love and support and let her know she is the number one most wonderful person in your life… hold her hand and calm her fears and kiss her forehead and cry and laugh with her… spend every moment you can with her. I AM SO GLAD I DID WITH MY HUSBAND!!! God bless…Cristelle
get as much information as you can, Don’t think to far ahead take each week as it comes. Death from cancer can be very peacefull
