There are different types of thyroid cancer (carcinoma of the thyroid), and the most common types (papillary carcinoma and follicular carcinoma) are highly curable if detected early. Up to 97% of these common types of thyroid cancer that occur in younger people are completely cured with appropriate treatment. Less common types, including medullary carcinoma and anaplastic carcinoma, tend to spread more rapidly and extensively than the other types and have a worse prognosis.
Most commonly, thyroid cancers in the early stage produce no symptoms. As the cancer grows, a small lump or nodule can be felt in the neck. The vast majority of thyroid nodules are caused by benign conditions, but about one per cent of these lumps represent early stages of thyroid cancer. If the cancer spreads, it can cause symptoms that include:
Problems with swallowing
Hoarseness
Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
Breathing difficulty
Pain in the throat and/or neck
Remember, 99% of nodules in the thyroid gland are benign, but only your doctor can determine if a lump in your neck is cancerous. Even the symptoms above can be caused by infections and other benign conditions. If you have a lump in the neck or have the above symptoms, you should visit your doctor to determine the cause of your symptoms.

I just had surgery 3 weeks ago to remove my thyroid. It had a small amount of cancer on a nodule that was removed in a previous surgery. I had really no signs! I noticed a pea size nodule on my neck and went to the Dr. I had an ultrasound, needle biopsy and was sent to an ear nose and throat Dr. Now I am seeing a radiation/oncology Dr to have a iodine radiation treatment.

It’s hard to say what the symptoms are, many people have no symptoms and the thyroid mass is discovered during a routine sinus scan or something of that nature.
My daughter was diagnosed last year after having no symptoms of thyroid cancer. She had a multitude of other symptoms, but no one put two and two together until I insisted that someone run some tests on her. It was discovered that she had a mass of a little over 2 cm on the right side of her thyroid.
After a surgery on September 14th to remove the mass, the biopsy results came back as follicular carcinoma. She underwent another surgery on October 2nd to remove her entire thyroid and then underwent radioactive iodine therapy in December.
If you suspect that there is anything wrong, my advice to you is to pursue it until someone listens to you. Don’t just assume that you have nothing wrong when your gut is telling you that someting IS wrong. Trust me. Had I not insisted that they run tests on my daughter, well, I don’t even want to go there.
